POS system pricing for Ethiopia, pay once or by the month
Many POS and stock systems sold in Ethiopia charge a yearly or monthly fee for as long as you trade, often per branch, on top of the hardware. BelloPOS works differently. Lite is free for good. Go, Pro and Pro+ can be bought once as a licence you keep, so you stop paying after the first purchase, or as a monthly or yearly key paid upfront for as many months as you need. Nothing renews by itself. If a key runs out, BelloPOS falls back to Lite and keeps every product, sale and customer account.

How Ethiopia pays, and how you record it
BelloPOS does not process payments and is not connected to telebirr, CBE Birr, M-Pesa, banks or card machines. The customer pays the way they always do, and you pick the payment method on the sale in BelloPOS, so every sale shows how it was paid. You can add your own payment methods to match how your shop gets paid.

Because BelloPOS does not read your telebirr or bank statements, check the sales recorded under each method against the wallet or bank statement at closing. A gap usually means a payment was recorded under the wrong method.
Sales register machines, e-invoices and VAT: what applies in Ethiopia
A POS system does not make you compliant on its own. These are the main rules for a trading business, each with a link to the Ministry of Revenues document we read. Your situation may differ, so confirm with your accountant.
Accredited sales register machines
Council of Ministers Regulation No. 139/2007 requires taxpayers named in MoR directives to use accredited sales register machines, meaning cash register or point-of-sale machines with fiscal memory, registered with a use permit. Receipts must show items such as your TIN, the machine's permit number and the taxable and non-taxable amounts. BelloPOS is not an accredited machine and its receipts are not fiscal receipts.
Electronic invoice system
MoR Directive No. 1142/2018 E.C. (2026) makes an accredited electronic sales register system, connected to the Ministry's electronic invoice registration system, mandatory for taxpayers who keep books of account, following a schedule the tax authority sets. Listed sectors, including food retail, restaurants and beverage serving, need systems that also work offline. BelloPOS is not accredited and is not connected to that system.
VAT at 15% above the registration threshold
Under VAT Proclamation No. 1341/2024, a business must register for VAT when its taxable supplies over 12 months exceed 2,000,000 birr (or the amount set by directive), and apply within 7 days of becoming liable. The standard rate is 15%, with zero-rated and exempt supplies listed in the schedules. BelloPOS sales reports by day and by product help you prepare your figures; VAT invoices and returns stay with your accredited system and your accountant.
Penalty for not issuing a tax invoice
Tax Administration (Amendment) Proclamation No. 1434/2026 sets a penalty of 100,000 birr for each tax invoice not issued to a buyer when one is required, and says the authority cannot waive it. It also asks MoR to issue a directive on electronic invoices with QR codes. Receipts printed from BelloPOS are sales records only and do not replace the tax invoice you are required to issue.
Category A, Category B and the end of Turnover Tax
Income Tax (Amendment) Proclamation No. 1395/2025 classes companies and anyone with annual turnover of 2,000,000 birr or more as Category A. Other businesses are Category B and pay tax on annual gross sales at 2% to 9% depending on the band, unless VAT-registered or in a listed profession. The Turnover Tax Proclamation is listed as repealed. BelloPOS reports give you the gross sales figure to check.
BelloPOS is not certified, accredited or registered by the Ministry of Revenues or any other Ethiopian authority. It is not a sales register machine, not an accredited electronic sales register system and not connected to the MoR electronic invoice system, and it issues no fiscal receipts or tax invoices. Deliveries from wholesalers in Merkato are booked in against the order, and the low-stock list shows what to buy before the weekend. Neighbours who pay at month-end have dubie accounts with limits. Tax receipts still come from the shop's accredited sales register machine.
Café and pastry shop in Bole, Addis Ababa
On Pro, the café runs a counter till, a kitchen printer and waiters' phones over its own Wi-Fi. Macchiato, buna and pastry orders go from the table to the bar at once, and each table keeps its own bill. Coffee, milk and flour come off stock as they sell. The receipt the customer must receive is issued by the café's accredited machine.
Wholesale and retail shop in Kezira, Dire Dawa
The shop sells by the carton to small suks and by the piece to walk-in buyers. With Go, each suk owner gets a wholesale price group and a credit account with a statement, so the owner knows who owes what before releasing more stock. Purchase orders track goods arriving from Addis Ababa, and Ares reports which lines move slowest.

Is there a monthly fee?
