Free supermarket and grocery POS

A grocery checkout is measured in items per minute, and every one of them starts with a barcode. BelloPOS works with any USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner straight out of the box: scan, and the product, price and tax land in the basket. Products without a barcode get one you print yourself, on labels from the app.

Behind the till it is a full inventory desktop app (stock levels, categories, suppliers and purchase orders), installed on your own PC in Morocco, where the data stays. The free lifetime licence covers checkout, receipts, barcodes and stock, so a small shop can run the whole thing without paying anything.

What you get

Barcode scanner support

Any USB or Bluetooth scanner works with no driver hunt. Scan to sell and scan again to receive a delivery, so stock and shelf agree.

Print your own barcode labels

Loose goods, repacked items and anything that arrived unlabelled get a barcode you generate and print from the app, in the label size you use.

Stock you can trust

Every sale and every purchase moves the count. See what is low before the shelf is empty, and check margins against what you actually paid your supplier.

Fast, offline checkout

Multiple tax rates, several payment methods and a customer screen, all running on the shop's PC, so the queue never waits on a connection.

A till system for spaza shops, superettes and grocers

A neighbourhood grocery lives on small sales: a loaf of bread, airtime, a cold drink, a packet of chips. That means long queues at month-end and thin margins all year. BelloPOS scans barcodes with any USB or Bluetooth scanner, prints labels for loose and repacked goods, and takes stock off the shelf count with every sale. Set 15% or 0% VAT per product, so brown bread and maize meal sit on the same slip as cold drinks. Because everything runs on the PC in your shop, load shedding and a dead router do not close the till.

From a spaza shop in Soweto or Khayelitsha to a superette in Gqeberha or a cash and carry in Johannesburg, the jobs are the same. Go adds the account book for regulars who pay on SASSA day or at month-end, with limits so nobody runs up too much, plus trade price groups for tuck shops and resellers who buy in bulk. Purchase orders help you check deliveries from wholesalers against what you ordered. The daily report shows cash, card and SnapScan separately, so the cash-up is done in minutes.

Every way your customers pay

South Africans still pay with cash, but tap, QR codes and instant EFT are growing fast. BelloPOS records each payment by method so your cash-up balances, while the money itself goes through the card machine or app you already use.

  • Cash, with change worked out and a cash drawer that opens on the sale
  • Card and tap, on your own card machine from your bank or provider
  • QR payments such as SnapScan and Zapper, recorded as their own method
  • EFT and instant payments such as PayShap, for larger orders
  • Split payments, for example part cash and part card
  • Customer accounts (the book), where regulars pay later, in Go and above
  • Open and close each shift with a float and an X/Z report

BelloPOS does not connect to card machines or process payments itself. The customer pays on your existing card machine or app, and you record the method and amount in BelloPOS.

Spaza and grocery POS questions

Can I run a spaza shop on the free plan?

Yes. Lite covers selling, till slips, barcodes, barcode labels and stock on one till, for free and for good. Many small shops start on an old laptop with a cheap scanner. When you want the account book, trade prices, purchase orders or scheduled backups, move to Go. You keep all your products and sales when you upgrade.

How do I handle zero-rated items like brown bread?

Set the VAT rate on each product. Give zero-rated basic foodstuffs a 0% rate and other goods 15%, and BelloPOS shows the right VAT on each line of the slip. SARS publishes which foodstuffs are zero-rated, and prepared food is usually standard-rated, so confirm each item with your accountant. BelloPOS is not approved by SARS.

Can customers buy on the book and pay later?

Yes, with Go. Create the customer, set a credit limit and sell on account. Each purchase and payment goes into their ledger, and you can print a statement when they come in to settle. If a sale would take them over the limit, the till warns you. Keep in mind that customer names and numbers are personal information under POPIA.

What about goods without barcodes?

Print your own. Generate a barcode for loose sweets, repacked sugar or rice, and home-made items, and print labels in the size you use. Items without a label can also be found by name or tapped on the product grid, where you put your favourites first: handy for airtime, a bag of ice or a vetkoek from the counter.

Does it still work during load shedding?

Yes. BelloPOS never needs the internet to sell, so only the computer or tablet needs power, and a tablet runs on its own battery. Many grocers put the laptop or PC, slip printer and cash drawer on a small UPS or inverter, which is far less power than a fridge needs. Your card machine runs on its own battery, and you record the card payment in BelloPOS as usual.
